Dear Kimberly,
Have you ever noticed how nature seems to show up in just the right way when you're truly paying attention? This summer, while walking on the beach in the early morning, I was blessed to see dolphins—multiple times! These beautiful creatures reminded me of something powerful…
Dolphins are social animals, much like us. They form lifelong bonds, have flexible friendships, communicate clearly, support each other in survival and play—and yes, they even “smile.”
And it got me thinking… Who’s in your tribe?
What is “your tribe”?
Your tribe is your circle. The people (and even pets) who show up consistently in your life—family, friends, small groups, co-workers, your faith community. These are the ones who help you laugh, navigate life’s messy middle, or just sit beside you in silence when needed.
But here’s a truth I love from Undo It by Dr. Dean Ornish:
“Who we choose not to be with brings as much meaning to our lives as who we choose to be with.”
Not every relationship brings healing. Sometimes what we need most is safe, sincere, soul-level connection—not correction, not fixing, not judgment. Just love, presence, and belonging.
What happens when we don’t have a true connection?
- Isolation and loneliness are linked with higher levels of pain and inflammation
- Chronic stress from lack of connection shortens life expectancy
- It can lead to withdrawal, inactivity, poor sleep, and unhealthy habits
What does true connection create?
In Okinawa, Japan—a Blue Zone of longevity and vitality—people create small, committed social circles called moais. These 5–8 person groups meet regularly to support one another with everything from food and finances to meaningful conversation. They prioritize connection as a wellness practice!
You and I can do this, too.
When we build our tribe intentionally, we create a healing loop: Connection → Love → Less stress → Lower inflammation → More energy to connect again
How to Start Building or Shaping Your Tribe:
Reflect: Who lifts you up? Who drains you? Revise: It’s okay to reshape your circle with love and boundaries. Reach out: Serve, support, smile. The tribe you’re looking for may also be looking for you.
